Kitsch Café, 180–190 Deakin Ave, Mildura (inside Mildura Waves Aquatic and Leisure Centre & Library)

On paper, a café inside an aquatic and leisure centre might not scream hearing-friendly. Leisure complexes typically mean hard surfaces, high ceilings, echoing corridors and the general acoustic chaos of wet feet and excited children. Kitsch Café defies every one of those expectations — and the reason becomes clear when you realise it also sits within the library precinct. That changes everything acoustically.

    The space
Step inside and the café feels entirely separate from the leisure centre world around it. The library setting brings an inherent culture of quiet — and Kitsch leans into it beautifully. Well-spaced tables, comfortable couches, and soft furnishings create a genuinely relaxed environment. A thoughtful barrier between the main café seating and the kids play area does meaningful acoustic work — containing the energy of little ones without eliminating the family-friendly atmosphere entirely. Soft background music sits at exactly the right level — present but unobtrusive. The overall vibe is unmistakably chilled.

    The acoustic experience
We visited at 3pm on a Saturday — post-lunch lull, pre-dinner quiet — and the noise level was lovely. Conversation was effortless, the space felt calm and unhurried, and the staff were warm, happy and efficient without adding any bustle to the room. For anyone with hearing loss or tinnitus, this is a genuinely comfortable environment at this time of day.

    Timing matters
Kitsch Café sits inside a busy aquatic centre, and swimming peak times — particularly weekend mornings and school holiday periods — will bring a different energy. The café can get lively when the pools are at capacity and families are moving through.
STAFF TIP: After 2pm each day is the sweet spot — pools quietening down, library calm, café relaxed, staff attentive.

    The food and drink
Coffee and cake, well executed. The broader menu spans modern Asian-inspired dishes — rice paper rolls, steamed dumplings, bao, and a thoughtful all-day menu with good gluten free and vegan options. Affordable, fresh and a cut above what you’d expect from a leisure centre café.

Ambient Menu verdict: Hearing-friendly at off-peak times — particularly mid to late afternoon on weekends. The library setting anchors the vibe beautifully. Avoid swimming peak times if noise is a concern. A genuinely pleasant surprise and a welcome option for Mildura visitors and locals alike.
