We were lucky enough to attend a 70th birthday party at ‘The Kitchen at Bec Hardy’. First impressions were of a rural setting – gums trees, vines off to the distance, and only the sound of distant chatting. Our group was twenty strong.

The only other diners sat under a second large verandah.

The combination of rustic barn styling with high quality furnishings and crockery make for an elevated yet relaxed space.

Our host had organised Tipsy Hill Estate white, rose and red. Easy drinking which is how I’ve found all the Hardy family wines. No beer is available, so you’d better like wine or water….

Our meal was the ‘FEED ME LONG STORY at $90 PER PERSON’. Whether vegetarian or carnivore, each course was presented impecably on hand made, bowls, plates etc. that complemented the artistic food on offer. This was most defintely not a ‘slap it on your plate’ pub grub meal.

Highlights for me were:

1) Meredith Chevre, Home Grown Basil, McLaren Vale Almond (see photo with pink melon dressing)
2) Sliced kohl rabi “triangles x 4” filled with cauflower puree (see photo)
3) House-made Pasta, Carrot & Ricotta with Walnut (no photo)
4) Strawberry sorbet with fresh figs (see photo)

Kate was one of our friendly and attentive staff. She said she knew me and after a few minutes we worked out that we did! In March 2023, we met when we had a similar ‘work of art’ delicious lunch at Red Poles, McMurtrie Rd, McLaren Vale.

Back then 25 year old Connor was Red Poles’ chef but is now based at Bec Hardy. Kate brought the young man to meet the adoring masses. We even applauded him at the end of our meal!

I loved this relaxing, laid-back restaurant. Perhaps an accredited venue in future?.
