Friday night and we were looking for a treat. I came across She Shells at Glenelg as an accredited restaurant and after reading the reviews here, I had to try for myself.
AMBIENCE
The restaurant was full the night we visited, with around 25 people inside. A large group occupied the front of the dining area. Although the eatery isn’t very big, the owners deserve credit for keeping the noise level low. The acoustics clearly received careful attention. My dining partner, who has worked in music technology and production, was impressed by the quiet atmosphere. He commented, ‘Something they’ve done has deadened the echo in the room.’
PARKING
Street parking was good on Moseley St and we were able to find a park 20m away. In summer this could be harder to come by
MENU OVERVIEW
They promised us a seafood extravaganza, and She Shells certainly delivered! The menu featured a large selection of local seafood prepared in a variety of ways.
ENTREE
My table companion chose an entree size bowl of Mussels with Supreme sauce. Hearty tomato and garlic sauce with an abundance of mussels served with a side of crunchy garlic bread. He was a hungry guy and this dish filled the empty spot in his tummy nicely. Prawn Cocktail was my choice as a nod to 1988. The prawns were plump and juicy with a Marie sauce that complimented the prawns well. A great start to the whole dining experience.
MAINS
Here is where Nathan the waiter came into play. My partner asked which fish he should choose as the Fish of the Day component of his She Shells Beach Basket and Nathan was full of information – did he want buttery or firm, delicate or full flavoured? There is a list of fresh fish to choose from and Nathan could tell you where they all came from. This description is very helpful for novices to the fish world and my partner chose Gummy Shark as he likes a more robust flesh fish. I ordered the Beach Basket also with my fish of choice Flathead.
The Beach Basket comes crumbed or grilled and is served with gluten-free shoestring fries, a side salad, and coleslaw. Every element of both Beach Baskets was delicious. It’s the little things, like homemade tartare sauce, that show the chef’s respect for everything on the plate. The fish came in a generous portion and was the highlight of the basket. My flathead was flaky, buttery, and melted in my mouth. The gummy shark was cooked perfectly—moist and delicious. Panko-crumbed Australian prawns and calamari tasted succulent and fresh. Two very happy diners savored their meals.
The fish vary according to the season and availability. The attention to providing fresh and local seafood was a big
The shells lit up in the tables are very cool for the kids to keep occupied with.
DESSERT
Although we were very satisfied after our two seafood courses, we had to sample the desserts. I have a separate stomach for sweet treats
and in my defence, I am content to share. We chose the Apple Pie (again thanks to Nathan for helping us choose) which came with cream & ice cream. We work well sharing as he likes cream and I prefer the ice cream! Wide range of desserts on the menu to choose from and the Apple Pie was sweet, hot and we really enjoyed the flavours.
SERVICE
Nathan and his team stayed on top of their service game. They answered every question promptly, and we appreciated his guidance with the menu. This demonstrated his in-depth knowledge of the menu and ingredients, which often lacks at other establishments.
BOOKINGS
I highly recommend booking ahead, as this popular eatery is famous for its seafood.
She Shells will be on my Favourites list and I can’t wait to try their other dishes such as Garlic Prawns and King George Whiting
