ACE Your Hearing

Practical communication support for adults with hearing loss

What is ACE Your Hearing?

ACE Your Hearing is a small-group education and support program designed for adults with age-related hearing loss, and their family members or close communication partners.

It has been developed by The University of Queensland, in partnership with leading hearing health and research organisations.

ACE Your Hearing focuses on improving everyday communication and supporting the social and emotional well-being of people living with hearing loss.

Why is this program important?

Hearing loss affects more than just hearing sounds clearly. It can also impact:

  • Confidence in conversations
  • Social participation
  • Relationships with family and friends
  • Emotional well-being

While hearing devices are an important tool, many people benefit from learning practical communication strategies and having the opportunity to share experiences with others facing similar challenges.

What does the program help with?

ACE Your Hearing helps participants to:

  • Follow conversations more easily, especially in noise and group settings
  • Learn practical strategies for real-life listening situations (e.g. cafés, meetings, family gatherings)
  • Problem-solve communication challenges
  • Build confidence and self-advocacy skills
  • Reduce frustration, isolation and listening fatigue
  • Strengthen communication between people with hearing loss and their significant others

What does the program involve?

  • Small group format (typically 8–12 participants)
  • Delivered in 2 sessions, of approximately 2 hours
  • Participants are encouraged to bring a family member or friend

Sessions include:

  • Group discussions and shared experiences
  • Practical communication strategy training
  • Problem-solving in everyday listening situations
  • Discussion of the emotional and social impacts of hearing loss

The program content is tailored to the needs of each group.

Who is ACE Your Hearing for?

  • Adults aged 50 years and over with age-related hearing loss
  • People who use hearing aids or cochlear implants
  • People who feel they need more support than hearing devices alone
  • Partners, family members and close friends who want to improve communication

Evidence-based and research-led

ACE Your Hearing is:

  • Based on strong research evidence
  • Co-designed with people who have hearing loss
  • Currently being evaluated in real-world hearing clinics

Research shows that programs like ACE improve communication, wellbeing and social participation for people with hearing loss.

Hearing better isn’t just about devices — it’s about communication, confidence and connection.

ACE Your Hearing provides practical tools and support to help people with hearing loss stay engaged, connected and confident in everyday life.
