This was my first visit to this Japanese restaurant which is close to Rundle St and North Terrace, Botanic Gardens. Our group of six chose Umai as it was authentic, small and different.

The restaurant was close to full with 24 diners. There were only six people outside on the covered area on Ebenezer Place / Union St.

We all agreed that the food was great. Hot saki was not to everyone’s taste).
– an interesting almost bitter Japanese Green Salad,
– Ten Don – Deep-fried vegetable with rice, pickle radish, tentsuyu and mixed salad
– Vegetable tempura – mixed seasonal vegetable- onion, eggplant, sweet potato with tempura sauce
and many other dishes.

Prices for both food and drinks were very reasonable.

I will visit again but must reserved an outfoor table. Indoors was not good for me. I had tried to do on-line research on the venue but missed the fact that the restaurant is full of glass and hard surfaces.

I was told the ‘Umai’ means clever, good or favourable in English. I need to be clever next time.
