We hadn’t been back for ages. On entering, I thought the owners had changed as the staff were new, new tables and the music was loud.

So I asked one of the young men behind the counter – no changes. Next, he turned the music down to normal levels at my request.

As we were having dinner with Chinese friends all dishes were shared.

    – Complimentary garlic bread
    – lime scallops
    – deep sea cod
    – sashimi tuna
    – panko crumbed scallops
    – natural + Kilpatrick + ‘Italian’ oysters
    – crumbed snapper
    – salad and French fries

All fresh, well presented and delicious.

I introduced our Chinese friends to Prancing Pony Hopwork Orange Pale Ale. I need to buy a slab one day!

In summary, same high standards, same owner but new staff need to get used to diners’ preferred ambience.

We took some Canadian visitors for a seafood dinner before Baleen Moondjan on Glenelg foreshore. On arrival at 5-45pm we were surprised to have the restaurant to ourselves, but many diners arrived after 6pm.

Nathan was well-versed in the taste, texture and way to cook the large range of fish on offer (8+). We ordered two fish specials – 2 x Mahi-Mahi and a salmon and a crumbed calamari. All were fresh, delicious and appreciated.

These days there are more staff doing table service which must show the success of this great value, fish speciality restaurant. I will be back!

PS: The wide selection of Prancing Pony beers was pleasing.

Was blown away how the restaurant was perfectly designed to create a relaxed ambience even when all tables were full of guests. We had no trouble having conversations on our table of four (who would have thought cork and corrogated iron feature walls were specifically chosen for their acoustic properties)!!!

Food was enjoyable and the staff extremely friendly!!

    Definitely worth a visit.

We arrived at 5pm assuming that the restaurant would be quiet. It was full by 5-30pm and in spite of all the diners was still quiet and easy to chat.

We ordered two plates of mixed shell fish – excellent oysters Kilpatrick, mussels, scallops. Well presented and tasty.

Our shared mains were Panko crumbed Coorong mullet, snapper and scallops. Also, the squid rings were easily the best that I’ve eaten anywhere. No rubbery, chewy rings here!

It’s pleasing to see this acoustically considerate venue doing well.

We’ll be back as I need to try to mussel pot.

🍽️ Friday night and we were looking for a treat. I came across She Shells at Glenelg as an accredited restaurant and after reading the reviews here, I had to try for myself.

    🦻 AMBIENCE

The restaurant was full on the night we visited with 25 or so people in it. A large group were in the front of the dining area. It’s not a very big eatery but full credit to the owners as the noise was very low level. You could tell that the acoustics had very much been taken into consideration. My dining partner who has worked in music technology and music production, was very impressed at how low the noise level was. His official comment was “something they have done has deadened the echo in the room”.

    🚗 PARKING

Street parking was good on Moseley St and we were able to find a park 20m away. In summer this could be harder to come by

    🍤 MENU OVERVIEW

We were promised a seafood extravaganza and She Shells certainly delivered on their promise! A large selection of local seafood was on the menu in a variety of different ways

    🦐 ENTREE

My table companion chose an entree size bowl of Mussels with Supreme sauce. Hearty tomato and garlic sauce with an abundance of mussels served with a side of crunchy garlic bread. He was a hungry guy and this dish filled the empty spot in his tummy nicely. Prawn Cocktail was my choice as a nod to 1988. The prawns were plump and juicy with a Marie sauce that complimented the prawns well. A great start to the whole dining experience.

    🐟 MAINS

Here is where Nathan the waiter came into play. My partner asked which fish he should choose as the Fish of the Day component of his She Shells Beach Basket and Nathan was full of information – did he want buttery or firm, delicate or full flavoured? There is a list of fresh fish to choose from and Nathan could tell you where they all came from. This description is very helpful for novices to the fish world and my partner chose Gummy Shark as he likes a more robust flesh fish. I ordered the Beach Basket also with my fish of choice Flathead.

The Beach Basket can come crumbed or grilled and is served with Gluten Free shoestring fries, side salad and coleslaw. Every element of both Beach Baskets were delicious. It’s the little things like homemade Tartare Sauce that let you know the chef respects everything on the plate. The fish was a generous serve and the highlight of the basket. My Flathead was flaky, buttery and melted in your mouth. Gummy Shark was cooked perfectly, moist and delicious. Panko crumbed Australian Prawns and Calamari were succulent and fresh. Two very happy diners were delighted with their meals.

🦀 The fish vary according to the season and availability. The attention to providing fresh and local seafood was a big ✅ The shells lit up in the tables are very cool for the kids to keep occupied with.

    🥧 DESSERT

Although we were very satisfied after our two seafood courses, we had to sample the desserts. I have a separate stomach for sweet treats 😁 and in my defence, I am content to share. We chose the Apple Pie (again thanks to Nathan for helping us choose) which came with cream & ice cream. We work well sharing as he likes cream and I prefer the ice cream! Wide range of desserts on the menu to choose from and the Apple Pie was sweet, hot and we really enjoyed the flavours.

    👨‍🔧SERVICE

Nathan and his team were on top of their service game. Every question was answered promptly and we were grateful for his menu direction. This showed his knowledge of the menu and ingredients which can be lacking in staff at other establishments

    📖 BOOKINGS

I would definitely recommend booking ahead as this is a popular eatery known for its seafood

She Shells will be on my Favourites list and I can’t wait to try their other dishes such as Garlic Prawns and King George Whiting

For my birthday dinner, I wanted to go somewhere with easy conversation. Living down South, the #ambientmenuaccredited eateries were a bit far away so I checked this place out recommended by Stephen from ‘Stephens Sound Bites’

She Shells (Try saying that 5 times quick) at Glenelg is in Moseley street just off the main drag.

SERVICE: Very friendly attentive staff, great knowledge of menu, good wine list.

FOOD: Delicious. They only source local, fresh seafood, and the specials of the day depend on what the chef can get that day from the local Fish Mongers 🐟

    WE ATE:
    🍤 Malaysian Mussel Laksa $25
Spicy Laksa noodle Mussel soup. Bean sprouts, chilli, coriander, lime, sambal and coconut milk. Hubby added prawns, calamari and seafood for $5.00 extra

    🍣 Seafood Marinara $29
South Australian Black mussels in tomato , garlic, wine sauce. Spagetti garlic base.

🍝 Mr teen ate spaghetti Bolognese, which was good, but strange that he ate that after looking at this menu

👂 ACOUSTICS: They have made an effort to minimize noise with acoustic ceiling tiles and cork panelling on the walls.

    EAR BUD Q TIP
    —————————————————————————————————–

Best place to sit = opposite bar next to the cork wall.

At the front of the store they have small tables for 2-4, but not as well spaced as further inside. Out the back is the best chance for easy conversation 😉

We took Thai / Australian friends to dinner as they enjoy seafood and SheShells is far more reasonably priced that the Glenelg Marina seafood places.

There was a wide selection of “Fish of the Day” (see photo) and Sashimi coated in Dukka.

We probably made a little error in choosing both main dishes with batter, rather than grilled and batter. Regardless the rockling and seafood basket and scallops were very good.

In conversation with the owner (pictured), I discussed a reason for the relatively low noise even in a full restaurant. When specifying the design prior to fit-out, clever choices were made in materials e.g. acoustic ceiling tiles, cork wall coverings and old wine bottle corks on the bar (see photo).

I believe that Ambient Menu should consider accrediting this establishment after proper acoustic evaluation by “Ear Buds”.

This family owned restaurant has by far the widest variety of fish species on offer that I have ever seen. The owner goes to the fish market daily to source fish, so the varieties on offer on the menu change daily. We enjoyed the staff’s knowledge of the dishes and even a free whisky from the owner at the end, This is not a place to visit if you do not like seafood!
