We hadn’t eaten at Red Poles on McMurtrie Rd for over 10 years. Little has changed outwardly. A quiet bushland setting, rammed earth walls and a down to earth & creative feel.

On seating in a shady verandah near the kitchen, I was delighted at the peace. The restaurant was unusually quiet – Fringe time, no live music and it was post heatwave Saturday. We decided on the “Feed Me’ menu as we were in no rush and wanted to talk with our interstate visitor.

    The chef prepared:

    – House made damper with honey butter
    – White bait with tartare sauce
    – Kohlrabi, Leek with Avocado & Herbs (a work of art, see photo)
    – Wood smoked chicken , almonds and tarragon (my favorite)
    – Rare Kangaroo, Crème fraiche with Muntrie chutney and herb salad.
    – Ice cream Sanga (award winning and interesting, see photo).

We asked for SLOW service, so we spent three hours relaxing and chatting and drinking wine!

My only criticisms were that we had too much meat, so the kangaroo might have been substituted with a fish or veggie dish. However, staff did ask us for our preferences at least twice, so that issue was probably our own error.

In summary, Red Poles is the less formal, quieter (today anyway) and arty cousin of the nearby Salopian Inn. Excellent food in a relaxed, bushland setting.
