The last time I said to my teenage son, ‘You’ve been studying and training hard lately, I’m treating you to all you can eat sushi tonight’……. I had to sell a kidney to pay the bill. The tower of plates resembled the leaning tower of Pisa (lesson learnt: never say that to a teenage boy on a growth spurt).

So, this time I rewarded him I went with all you can eat sushi at Nijumaru Glenelg. For $39.50 you choose anything you want off the menu (and keep ordering till you have reached capacity). It’s an old school theme – all you can eat – but without the buffet, every dish made fresh to order, and strangers aren’t breathing over your food.

Although dining outside is normally quieter, it isn’t when you are in Moseley Square, so we booked a table inside. The restaurant was fully booked and I think it was quieter than outside in the square, but I did miss parts of the conversation across our table of two (and so did my son with his perfect hearing).

    !!!HOT TIP!!!

If you struggle in background noise eat on a less busy night or dine in early. We sat started at 6.30pm and could hear till 7.30pm by which time it was fully booked with several large groups. If you go in prepared to have amazing food and service, and happy to sacrifice part of the conversation (because you are too busy eating), it is worth the sacrifice.

    We devoured:
Katsu chicken – deep fried panko crumbed chicken
Aburi Scallop nigiri – flame seared Hokkaido scallop served with mayo and teriyaki sauce
Soft shell crab roll – deep fried crab, lettuce topped with teriyaki sauce, apoli, fried onion
Saute mix Mushroom – button mushroom, enoki mushroom in a soy garlic butter
Ika yaki – Grilled squid with home made oyster sauce
Takoyaki – battered deep fried Octopus balls topped with bonito
Aburi salmon roll – flame seared salmon with cream cheese and crab
Kara-age chicken – deep fried chicken, soy ginger, mayo
Terikaki chicken – slow coked chicken Maryland fillet with teriyaki sauce
Chicken avocado nigiri – sliced katsu chicken and avocado served with mayo and teriyaki sauce

And they were so good we may have had more than plate of some
