Two old work colleagues invited me to the Taphouse. It was a beautiful autumn day. Sunny and a perfect 20oC with a gentle breeze.

There were only a few diners and the ‘background’ music was yet again a few decibels too loud for my liking. However, we sat as far away from loudspeakers as possible in the middle outer perimeter of the outdoor area. This move was reasonably successful and we could chat without any problem.

We chose a slection from the ‘Small Plates” as we preferred vego food. This worked out well as we had variety, quality and plenty to snack over at a reasonable price. Too bad we spent far too much on beer and wine!

TRIO OF DIPS – Hummus, eggplant & beetroot dips with
BURRATA CHEESE – with heirloom tomato, pickled melon, olives and pine nuts, balsamic reduction, pita bread.
VEGETABLE TEMPURA – Roasted tempura vegetables served with tomato chutney.

The food was great, the beer selection was excellent and overall we had an enjoyable lunch. The Taphouse has moved up in my ranking.

It was only aq uick bite before a show at the Space Theatre. There are few other eating places nearby so I thought that the Taphouse was worth another go.

First impressions – loud music in the outdoor entrance area that thankfully diminished indoors. Our table at the western extremity indoors was noisy, in part due to floor to ceiling windows in the majority of the dining area. Also the place ws 75% full of well-dressed ballet show attendees.

Food was average at best albeit with very good hot chips.

TIP: the quietest area is near the entrance to the stairs up to the theatres and beside the toilets.

Not sure I will return after my third attempt.

Summary – great beer and ambience for those with great hearing and a good liver.

Well here is the comparison. On arrival, I was blasted by very loud recorded music inside and out. No guitarist in the corner playing alone and at a reasonable level.

Grating, techno beat, full volume ,music, that simply made me want to escape. Quickly ordered food with three others at our table. I left 30 minutes before the others to see the red carpet at the Cabaret Gala.

Unfortunately, I don’t remember the food as I could not focus on it.

I do not imagine that the majority of other diners (who were mostly over 60 years old) will have a desire to return.

    I will not return…

Pre-show quick dinner at the Taphouse underneath the Festival Centre’s Dunstan Theatre. The restuarant was only 25% full, so there was little background sound apart from a guitarist playing old covers. He was at the other end of the restaurant, so the volume was fine.

Fried mushroom with dip for me and a chicken burger for my wife. Both were tasty.

It’s the wide range of interesting craft beers that appeals to me here, so the food is secondary (sorry).

I’ll be back again next Friday for another pre-show dinner, so I will compare….
