The selection of breads, pastrys, cakes and pies is mind-boggling in this Hobart Institution.

We restrained ourselves to a couple of flat whites, a ham and cheese croissant and a large curried chick pea + vegetable pasty. All itms were brought outdoors to our small table on Hampden St.

Good food, cool weather in Australia’s best colonial suburb.

J & McR is possibly the best bakery in Tassie. It is certainly very well known and has a huge selection of breads, pastries, cakes and pies.

The indoor and out-front dining areas adds sandwiches and complements the baking with salads etc.
We sat on the side room as the main area for the cafe was loud due to lots of windows and lack of soft furnishings.
Our group had scallop and wakame pies, a beef Wellington pie, and a huge chocolate croissant to share.
