A bargain veggie Schnitzel at $14 and a couple of beers with an old colleague. A touch too loud for me in the main dining room but okay for a chat.

The bar staff were friendly as always.

My wife was keen to visit Harry’s Bar so that she could understand what I had been raving about. As we were in town for other jobs, we popped in for lunch.

It was a cool autumn day, but dry and not windy, so we sat outside on a very quiet balcony.

In previous visits, I bought the bargain $20 burger and beer special. We splashed out the big bucks this time for a veggie schnitty with Diane sauce and a chicken schitty with pepper sauce. Bother were excellent, large and served with mixed sales and good chips.

A big tick from my wife for Harry’s Bar. My regular visits can continue………..

For our 22nd wedding anniversary, we spent last night in town. So what do you do between lunch and dinner? You have wine and cheese at Harrys Bar!

This hidden gem was brought to my attention by our regular reviewer, Stephen M – it ‘sounded’ great, so hubby and I checked it out for ourselves.

There is a private area at one end of the bar where you choose cheeses and top end wine. Staff will arrange selected cheeses on a platter to enjoy with drinks, which is what we opted for. 4 items for $20 which we thoroughly enjoyed (and no we did not have with a Penfolds).

EAR BUD Q TIP
I spoke to the staff and they say it gets lively on a Friday night, but it is mostly quiet the rest of the time. When we arrived, there were about 20 x 20 somethings on a boozy bus trip. Their noise infected the whole building, possibly being heard in the northern hemisphere, but once they all left it was easy to hear and the place was quite full at that time.

I had walked past the downstairs Pokies section of Harry’s Bar hundreds of times and was never attracted to enter. However, a friend encouraged me to have lunch upstairs. He even talked about heritage toilets which has me intrigued.

Upstairs is a revelation. Wood panelled with a balcony overlooking Grenfell St, friendly staff and a bargain lunch! This room from the 1890’s is in the heart of the Adelaide’s CBD, has towering ceilings and is part of heritage listed Tattersalls room.

There is a private area at one end of the bar where you choose cheeses and top end wine. Staff will arrange selected cheeses on a platter to enjoy with drinks.

Drinks were reasonable. My experienced friend recommended the burger (choice of meats or veggie) with a drink included for a bargain $17. He told me that he normally chooses the most expensive red wine on the list…..

I hear that after work on Friday’s this spot may have quite a different noise level.

Look for the only gents toilet in Adelaide with a plaque proclaiming the heritage listing of the porcelain urinals and tiling from the 1890’s.

I will return, but may avoid Friday evenings.
