Our group was five of which two were vegetarians. Only the Yum Cha menus were supplied on each table. As Yum Cha had few veggie dishes, we asked at the entrance for the ‘proper’ menu which had a far more interesting selection.

Staff looked overworked and did not pay attention to our table for the whole 2 hours. Service was slow and one veggie main did not appear and neither did a starter and a drink. To resolve the mess between the their written notes at our table and the correct bill, I had to discuss the bill at length with staff.

Oh, and the rice arrived over 30 minutes before any of the main courses!

Perhaps their excuse was a busy pre-Xmas lunch.

I recently met with an audiologist in a city location who explained that Ding Hao on Wright St was worth a visit. He was of Hong Kong Cantonese heritage and was familar with such restaurants in the Adelaide CBD.

His comments interested me – the ceiling has acoustic baffling and has a low ambient noise. As we had a show at Her Maj at 7-30pm, we jumped off the tram early and went to Ding Hao’s new Wright St location. (They had to move from the Central market due to building work).

First impressions were of a large, brightly lit venue. Inside, I was impressed with the ceiling baffling as it was stylish, of a great depth and covering all ceilings. As a result, talking was very easy. Combined with no background music, these features make for a pleasant dining experience.

It was our first visit and our main course choices were not the best – mushroom and vegetables in oyster sauce and chicken & vegetables. Both looked and tasted similar! Next time we’ll be smarter.

Look out for the drinks menu. There is a “Crown Larger”, which unfortunately is the normal 385ml size in spite of an amusing spelling error.

(The only raised voice was from the kitchen for a few minutes. A very irrate chef was ‘explaining’ something in Cantonese to a poor soul).
