This was my first visit to one of Adelaide’s oldest pubs – 1841. First impressions were the balconies, outdoor tables & chairs and a surprisingly small interior. Renos delibrately left pre-1900 plaster and wallpaper in segments of the stone wall which was a nice touch. This old pub looked a little less fancy than some of the nearby renovations.

There was a sign outside publicising the new chef. As I’d never before visited the ‘Commy’, I have no idea if he / she changed the menu. Regardless, this is not the place to go if you are a vegetarian unless you like Kids Pizza, Wedges/Sour cream/chili or a couple of other uninspiring starters.

My wedges and my wife’s chicken schnitty (pepper sauce) were good standard pub fare.

The one and only ‘barmaid’ (owner?) was exceptionally friendly. I have not been called sweetie by a stranger for a very long time. But hey, we are in the Port were there is little highfalutin nonsense. Quite refreshing!
