We met friends at 5-30pm for an early pre-show dinner at this establised Gouger Street, Asian fusion restuarant. I last visited with work colleagues close to 8 years ago and was looking forward to another excellent meal.

Initially, we were the only customers and enjoyed a conversation with friends. I asked within 10 minutues of arrival if they would be kind enough to turn the piped music down, as it was beginning to irrritate me. Management did so to a n acceptable ow level, which was great.

Unfortunately, that afternoon I had to have emergency dental treatment and I was still recovering from the anesthestic. Perhaps, I should have cancelled, but since Marcia Hines at Her Majesty’s was booked, I made the mistake of going ahead with the evening.

The food was superb and the service excellent, so there were no complaints at all. The Concubine is unusual for Gouger St, as all the customers are European descent and all the staff are Asian. It has beautiful decor on both levels and is justifiably an award winner.

Within 30 minutes, the dining area was full of theatre-goers and the noise was deafening for me. The others at the table found it very loud, but the combination of the dentist and my poor hearing, resulted in me wanting to escape! I started to feel physically sick with the noise, so went outside while the others paid.

Needless to say, I caught an Uber home, while the others went to the. show. Ah well, lesson learned!
