We’d heard good things and were keen to experience it first hand. First impressions were of a large heritage hotel with many options – dining spaces, menus, accomodation, music, quizzes, bottle shop (cellar). The interiors are of a high modern standard. Clearly the owners have spent significant sums on recent renovations.

We decided to eat lunch on the balcony facing Mt Barker Rd. It was significantly quieter than all indoor dining areas on a busy Friday lunchtime. Although ‘outdoors’ it was a pleasant temperature (albeit with a jacket on) due to PVC blinds enclosing the attractive large balcony space.

There is a huge selection of beers (20+) on taps including South Aussie favorites, Coopers, Little Bang and Uraidla. It is a craft beer heaven.

Now for the important measure of a restaurant – food. We ordered:

MUSHROOM HOTPOT with MIXED MUSHROOMS, TOFU, UDON NOODLES, GREENS, MASTER STOCK. It smelled delicious from a distance and was a great choice.

VEGAN BURGER with WALNUT, CHICKPEA + COUS COUS PATTY, AVOCADO, PICKLED RED ONIONS, TOMATO, SSS SAUCE, CHIPS. I reckon it had the best veggie patty in terms of taste and texture, I’ve ever eaten. (and I’ve had many…)

The only hitch was that I was initially served the wrong meal. Quickly corrected.

In summary, the Stirling Hotel has food of a high quality in a lovely setting. Oh, and if you re a craft beer fan, you will be even happier.
