On a recent trip to Clare Valley we discovered this gem 💎

Ragu & Co honours the traditions and culinary methods of Italy. This charming establishment creates an authentic dining experience, transporting guests to the heart of Italy through its delicious cuisine.

The interior is homey and rustic, with exposed brick walls, wine barrels, wooden beams, and a staircase to a mezzanine level.

They pride themselves on supporting local producers, ensuring the freshest and highest quality ingredients.

The signature dish (which we tried) was, of course, the Ragu. And they have an impressive wine list that features a selection of wines from the Clare Valley as well as Italian wines and beverages.

We ate:
🍽️ FAGIOLINI ALLA NDUJA Sauteed green beans, garlic, spicy salami and toasted breadcrumbs (GF)
(I fear it is the only way my son will eat beans again, but I can’t make them like this)

🍽️ PATATE AL ROSMARINO Oven baked potatoes, rosemary, garlic and EVOO.

🍽️ RISOTTO ALLO SCOGLIO Carnaroli rice with fresh seafood from the Eyre Peninsula in white wine sauce and cherry tomatoes.
🍷 Perfectly paired with a 2021 Colterenzio DOC Pinot Grigio.

🍽️ MACCHERONI AL RAGÙ NAPOLETANO + 5 hours slow-cooked chunky beef & pork ragù in a rich tomato sauce.

🍽️ CARNIVORA, Pizza with Tomato, mozzarella, salame, ham and sausage.

We treated our sons’ friend for the weekend. As soon as he took a bite of the Ragu, he exclaimed, “Holy crap, this is glorious!” He continued with the added remark that he would never be able to enjoy ordinary pasta again after indulging in this feast. (I apologised to his parents when we dropped him home…. Woops).

EAR BUD Q TIP
Sit upstairs on the mezzanine. Carpeted floor, well spaced tables, and far enough away from downstairs for the sound from other diners so as not to be bothered by them.

Downstairs is lively. The slate floor, tin walls, less room to move and open plan make it very reverberant, so it is hard to converse here.

But Friday night, fully booked, upstairs was great. Staff pro tip: Friday night is usually busy, Saturday night is VERY busy, but any other time is pretty easy for conversation.

In conclusion, Ragu Italian Restaurant in Clare exceeded our expectations. Friendly, attentive service, mouthwatering dishes, easy conversation (in the right spot).

A feast for the senses that was a great start to the gourmet weekend. If you find yourself in Clare, be sure to make a reservation at Ragu. Your taste buds will thank you!
